MODERN and CLASSICAL LANGUAGES

Wide opportunities in linguistic study are offered, with modern languages taught by a specialist languages teacher. French, German, Spanish and Mandarin are available at various levels, from essential communication skills to a more thorough understanding of grammar and vocabulary, together with the cultural context of each language.

French and German

French is taught from Kindergarten to Year 6; German from Year 3 to Year 6. Children are examined at Breakthrough (Levels 1, 2 and 3) in line with the Languages Ladder.

Children in Upper School (Years 3 – 6) are invited to spend a week each year at Chateau de la Baudonnière in Normandy, where they experience total immersion in the French language, encouraging independence, confidence and a greater willingness to speak French when they return to the classroom.

Bronte has a partner school in Calais and children experience visits from the French children, and visits to the French school on alternate years. ‘Penpals’ are linked up and letters are exchanged with the French pupils.

An advanced French and German after-school club is run for children in Years 5 and 6 during the Spring and Summer terms.

Spanish and Mandarin

Beginners’ Spanish takes place at lunchtimes and is open to all children. Beginners’ Mandarin takes place after school in the Autumn term and is open to Years 5 and 6.
