The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is a nationally established structure designed for welfare and education from birth to age 5, in other words up to and including the Reception year (which is for children aged 4 on 1st September of that year).

At Bronte, learning is built around themes and interests, with a fine range of challenging activities. The children benefit from spacious, well-resourced indoor classrooms as well as an outdoor classroom. In one of the terms, weekly visits to a “forest school” setting add an enjoyable and memorable layer to our provision.

The school day in both Kindergarten and Reception is planned to allow time for children to engage in a combination of child-initiated and teacher-directed activities, to help nurture positive behaviour, good interactions with others, confidence and independence.

In Reception class more formal work begins. Teaching of phonics, introduction to the school reading scheme and daily English and mathematics teaching are the key features, as well as wider explorations of the different worlds the children are discovering.

In both Kindergarten and Reception, there are very close links to home, and parents are encouraged to tell the class teacher and teaching assistants about their children’s developments and interests. In school, children are given many opportunities to contribute and, with the support of parents, are encouraged to bring in toys and objects from home to complement learning.

The EYFS programme comprises seven areas of learning

  • Expressive Arts and Design

Children’s progress through these areas is carefully monitored with photographs and observational records collated in each child’s Learning Journal. These journals are presented to each child at the end of the year as a record of their year in school.

At the end of the year, each child is assessed according to the Statutory Framework for EYFS, to help in the smooth transition.
